I upgraded my phone to the new iPhone 4s after my Droid quit working. One of the main reasons I decided upon the iPhone was for the camera. (The Apps were a big part also) The things Apple said about the camera being greatly improved intrigued me.

It is not that I think a phone camera can replace a real camera, however, I know that the best camera is often the one you have with you and I always have my phone with me.

My first impressions of the iPhone camera are very positive. In quite a few ways it functions much like my Panasonic point and shoot. It has face recognition and captures very nice and colorful images. My impressions of the lens are that it is slightly wider than a 35mm lens on a traditional 35mm format camera.

On Oct 17 I took a short walk around a local park and shot the same scenes with my Leica M9 with a 35mm version 3 Summicron and my iPhone. I did this to show how well the iPhone can be used for a general toss about camera. Of course it is no where as good as the M9 is. After all the M9 captures some of the best files of any digital camera, better than my EOS 1DsIII or 1DIV does.

The point to remember is that the iPhone photos come from a device that is a phone AND a camera all for a few hundred bucks. Not bad at all for something like that. Also if using it as a point and shoot one can almost instantly share the images with friends and family BECAUSE it is a phone too.
